As a courtesy to our SHPOA Members, we’re bringing you a summary of each Stone Harbor Work Session and Council Meeting. Intended as summaries, these intentionally don’t have a lot of details and are not a substitute for the official Borough minutes.
Work Session
 
Good Samaritan
The Council issued a proclamation recognizing the courage and selflessness of Robert D. Gretzmacher. On July 5, after the lifeguards had gone off duty, Gretzmacher heard the cries of three people out in the ocean who were unable to get back on shore. He immediately swam out and brought back a teenage girl and then returned two more times to rescue her brother and father. The proclamation for Good Samaritan Lifesaving Efforts was presented to Gretzmacher by Mayor Tim Carney who noted that this is a wonderful example of ordinary people making extraordinary efforts for other people.

Public Safety Committee
Committee Chair Frank Dallahan noted that police reported 1,560 incidents that included patrolling streets and beaches, medical issue responses, traffic stops, and complaints from citizens. 

The Fire Department answered 164 calls to fires and EMS emergencies.

Recreation and Tourism
Committee Chair Bunny Parzych reported on July 4th weekend events. The 82nd Street Recreation field was packed with participants in the races, contests, and the Home Run Derby. On July 3rd, the field hosted a concert and fireworks display. She thanked the Fire Department, Police Department, and Public Works Department for their work during the weekend.

She said upcoming events include a Pickleball Tournament on August 1, and a Paddle Tennis Tournament August 7-8, which will include five national champions among the competitors. The Festival of Lights at the Marina is set for August 1 from 7:00-10:00 pm.

Regular Meeting
One communication from SHPOA Trustee Karen Humphreys offered thanks for the Stone Harbor free beach wheelchair program which was helpful when she had visiting family.
 
During Public Comment, there was a discussion regarding an infestation of raccoons, squirrels, and skunks. They live on the grounds of a house that is not being maintained and are now fanning out from there, damaging homes nearby. 

There is a recent ordinance requiring homeowners to maintain the upkeep of their homes. It can be used to force the homeowner in this case to clean up the premises.
 
Through the Consent Agenda, the Council approved seven resolutions, including a change order regarding improvements to the 96th Street Recreation Complex; a change order for the reconstruction of 121st Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues; the appointment of a part-time, temporary tax collector; and approval of an extension of the grace period for payment of taxes due on August 1, 2026.
