As a courtesy to our SHPOA Members, we’re bringing you a summary of each Stone Harbor Work Session and Council Meeting. Intended as summaries, these intentionally don’t have a lot of details and are not a substitute for the official Borough minutes.
Work Session

Vehicle stops, lifeguard house just about done
Police reported that in August, they stopped 304 motor vehicles. They cited 120 drivers for moving violations and there were 10 motor vehicle accidents.

Additionally, there were 30 animal complaints.

Beach Patrol headquarters has been occupied and is largely complete.

Recreation: Safety, surfing, and cars
Safety issues have been identified with the 97th Street Playground and Council is considering closing it.

The longboard surf contest has been postponed to October 15.

A car show will be held on 96th Street on October 8th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. [Note, this event was subsequently cancelled by the Borough]

Sand fill and banned plants
Borough coastal consultant Doug Gaffney provided an update on the upcoming beach fill project. The project is scheduled to begin in early winter and includes 90th Street to 114th Street as well as 122nd Street to the south jetty. He also reviewed alternatives to beach fills being evaluated such as beach scraping, sand fences, Great Channel dredging, alterations to existing jetties, the addition of new jetties, breakwaters, and the purchase of a county dredge.

A new ordinance is set to be introduced in the next Council meeting to prohibit the planting of invasive plants and promote the use of native plants.

Council Meeting
Council passed an ordinance to increase fees for Zoning Board applications and a resolution to issue $26.1 million in bond anticipation notes which is a reissue of existing debts and does not authorize new debt.
