As a courtesy to our SHPOA Members, we’re bringing you this summary of the Stone Harbor Council Meeting on February 16, 2021.

Lifeguard Station
At its February 16, 2021, Work Session, Council agreed to seek bids for a new lifeguard station, which could cost about $2.1 million. Council Members decided to scale back additional site work including landscaping and redoing the parking lot to save about $500,000 to $600,000. Construction could begin after Labor Day so the new station would be ready for the summer of 2022.

Boat rides and interesting speakers
The Tourism Department is considering using vendors to conduct boat tours which would pick up and drop off passengers at the Marina. The tours could include sunset cruises and water taxi services. The Borough would need some new infrastructure, like a finger pier, to accommodate the boats. The cost is undetermined but could be funded by revenue from the services.

The department also plans to set up a speaker series called “Stone Harbor Connections” via Zoom. The first speaker scheduled is Dr. Paul Offit, the director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, an author, and frequent television commentator on the COVID-19 pandemic. The talk is scheduled for 7 p.m. March 3, 2021. If interested, register early because the event is limited to 1,000 people.

Beach Sweeps
Spring and Fall Beach sweeps are planned for April 17, 2021 and October 23, 2021 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  

Weather Alarm
At its regular meeting on February 16, 2021, Council voted again to move the weather alarm from 106th Street and disclosed that it is considering two sites – Chelsea Park and Clarke’s Sunset Market, with Chelsea Park as the preferred location. Council has said that before moving the alarm, it would survey impacted neighbors and get their feedback. 

And, it plans to seek bids to repair the Water Tower. 

Affordable Housing 
Council updated its affordable housing ordinance to comply with state laws and regulations, including the Fair Housing Act and the Uniform Housing Affordability Controls. The ordinance is necessary so the Borough can satisfy its affordable housing obligations created by the addition of new lots in the Villa Maria By the Sea project.
