As a courtesy to our SHPOA Members, we’re bringing you a summary of each Stone Harbor Work Session and Council Meeting. Intended as summaries, these intentionally don’t have a lot of details and are not a substitute for the official Borough minutes.
Beach rescues, LED lights at the firehouse
Sandy Bosacco, Lifeguard Captain, noted that as the summer season ends, lifeguard staff will begin to dwindle. As a result, the Borough will reduce the number of lifeguard stands. Bosacco reported that rescues and other emergencies have been minimal. Lastly, the new lifeguard building’s permanent Certificate of Occupancy should be granted after Labor Day.
Fire Chief Roger Stanford noted that the emergency LED signage at the Fire Station is up and running.
Summer camps concluded but off-season activities are on the horizon
Shannon McPherson, Recreation Director, reported that all summer camps and leagues have ended. The Recreation Department was able to increase programming during the summer and had a very successful bike safety clinic. The department is planning for more activities to be added for the off-season months.
Jenny Olsen, Tourism Director, received Council approval for permits for several upcoming events, including the annual sidewalk sale being held Saturday, Aug. 27, the Savor September festival happening on the weekend of Sept. 23, and, Le Diner en Blanc, to be held at the 95th Street parking lot on Friday, Sept. 23.
Beach fill and beach public access plan updates
Coastal engineer Doug Gaffney gave an update on the beach fill project saying a review of most of the plan is complete and he expects no major changes. The next step is the draft of the cost-sharing agreement among Avalon, Stone Harbor, and the state, which is expected to be done in approximately two weeks. Anticipated beach fill costs for Stone Harbor are $2 million. Lastly, Gaffney reported that the first draft of the Municipal Public Access Plan is complete. This is an important step in obtaining the renewal for the general beach permit for beach and dune maintenance which expires at the end of September.
Council also discussed upcoming ordinances for salaries and administrative reporting.
Council passed several resolutions including ones to conduct beach surveys, replace a beach pavilion, and to participate in Cape May County’s Co-Op to purchase rock salt.
