As a courtesy to our SHPOA Members, we’re bringing you a summary of each Stone Harbor Work Session and Council Meeting. Intended as summaries, these intentionally don’t have a lot of details and are not a substitute for the official Borough minutes.
Public Safety

August 2024 reports



Fire –There were 106 fire responses and 126 EMS responses.

Police – There were 305 motor vehicle stops, 102 motor vehicle
summons, 867 parking tickets, 6 motor vehicle accidents, and several other minor incidents. All but 2 summer personnel have left the force.
 Hiring for next season is underway.

Beach Patrol – There were 4 rescues, 3 medical assists, 1 police call, 3 lost children, and 1 Hobie Cat rescue. 

Office of Emergency Management – Some minor flooding during August.

Recreation and Tourism Recreation – Fall programs have started that include soccer and Sky Hawks sports. Signups for Halloween trick or treating is available on the Recreation Department at https://stoneharborrecreation.com. 
Fitness classes continue during the fall.

Tourism – The annual Halloween carnival sponsored be the elementary school will be held again this year. The 2025 beach tag design contest by the elementary school students is in progress. The Farmers’ Market has ended for the year. The Classic Car Show on 96th Street is scheduled for October 12, from 10 AM to 1 PM. Another beach sweep is set for Saturday October 19th at 9 AM. Planning for Holiday Weekend on November 29th and 30th is underway.

Natural Resources – 
Hurricane Ernesto caused significant erosion on the beach, particularly at the Point access road area. The access road is closed to pedestrians and vehicles and will remain so until it is repaired. 

The Sustainability project sponsored by SHPOA and the Garden Club on Second Ave between 109th and 110th Streets is underway. A sustainable plant garden is being installed on the island.

The Scotch Bonnet restoration project is now underway. The project will restore 12 acres of marshland near the Wetlands Institute.

The Bird Sanctuary Committee Board will be meeting to discuss the new pump house signage, bench pavers, native planting, and memorial bricks.

Discussion Items
 – The 96th Street Playground – Two contracts are scheduled to go out for bid this month. The first is for the playground installation. The second is for the bathroom and basketball court improvements.

Regular Meeting – 
The Consent Agenda was modified and approved. The resolution to authorize a feasibility study of a Storm Water Utility was removed and may be considered at a later date. Notable resolutions approved were:

Public hearing and investigation of energy bill increases from Atlantic City Electric.

Corrective action plan for the 2023 annual audit.

Competitive contracting for Recreation and Tourism software.
