Stone Harbor Council Meeting Summary for November 3, 2020

As a courtesy to our SHPOA Members, we’re bringing you a summary of this month’s Stone Harbor Council Meetings.

Flood Control
At its regular meeting on Nov. 3, 2020, the Stone Harbor Council voted down a stormwater runoff ordinance (#1575) for further work. Those rejecting the ordinance as written say it needs to be consistent with setback and bulkhead ordinances and call for having gravel or artificial turf between curbs and sidewalks. Additionally, members called for further study of drip irrigation. This ordinance, once rewritten, can help the borough with flood control and water conservation. 

Villa Maria
Mayor Judith M. Davies-Dunhour read a prepared statement noting that the public will soon have answers to its questions about the Villa Maria by the Sea project. The sisters plan to build an all-season retreat and sell some of their land which would be developed into housing. They have asked the borough to vacate the portion of 1st Avenue at 111TH Street, which is a paper street that has never been used as a street. Villa Maria also is seeking other government approvals. 

Fire Department
The Council created a combination paid/volunteer Fire Department. The Fire Department’s goal is to sustain a rapid response time for all emergencies. To accomplish this goal, nine paid firefighter/EMTs will be hired to supplement the volunteer Fire Department at a cost of $500,000 per year.  For more information, please read https://stoneharbornj.org/stone-harbor-fire-department-creates-combination-paid-volunteer-organization/

Other News
The Council agreed to apply for federal flood management and building resilience grants.
