Saving  Our Salt Marsh

Have you ever driven on Stone Harbor Boulevard and wondered what those pools of water you see are that are mixed in with the marshes? After you watch this informative video, you’ll know that that’s not necessarily a good thing. This is not a unique problem in our area, but we are fortunate to have the world-renowned Wetlads Institute right over the bridge. In this interview, Susan Barrett and Lenore Tedesco go into detail about the test area we have seen in the marshes that shows promise for an alternative process that helps with the use of potential dredge material, but also helps bring the marshes back from destruction.

An Interview with Brittany Welch, of The Wildlife Gardener LLC and Beth Toolen, a past SHPOA Trustee and current member

This project, financed and coordinated by SHPOA, was also supported by the Stone Harbor Public Works Department and the Garden Club.  The Native Garden supports our goal of enhancing Island sustainability by saving water and welcoming birds, bees and butterflies, as nature intended.  We hope to encourage our residents (and landscapers!) to incorporate native plantings into their local gardens.

Did you lose precious plants during Hurricane Erin? Many of us did. The salty floodwaters are the primary reason. Before you re-plant, please consider salt-tolerant natives for your Stone Harbor Garden. Click here to read more about Salt-Tolerant Plants

SHPOA is the Stone Harbor Property Owners Association,
As an organization, we work to keep our members informed of what’s going on in the town where all of us have invested our resources and memories. Our mission is to be “a bridge” to borough officials, that is, to advise and consult with them about issues of importance to our members, as many are not local voters.
