Stone Harbor Beach Replenishment Project Update

The southernmost portion of the Stone Harbor Beach Replenishment Project, the area from 123^rd to 105^th Streets, was completed on Tuesday, March 7, 2017. The dredge, the “Texas”, transferred sand from Hereford’s Inlet to the Stone Harbor beaches. Approximately 394,000 cubic yards of sand were distributed onto these Stone Harbor beaches. The Texas has since moved to Townsend’s Inlet where it is in the process of restoring the north beaches of Avalon.

Avalon’s project will place 940,000 cubic yards of sand on the beaches from 9^th Street south to the northerly limits of 30^th Street. This project is expected to take between 30 and 40 days to complete, and should be wrapped up before the end of April, conditions permitting.

The United States Army Corps of Engineers has just approved a new Request for Proposals (RFP) that will place an additional 340,000 cubic yards of sand on Avalon’s beaches from 77^th to 80^th Streets, and on Stone Harbor beaches from 80^th Street to 105^th Street. That work would be conducted in May 2017 and be completed by the mid-June 2017. The combined total of sand from the 123^rd to 105^th Street project and this new RFP work should restore Stone Harbor beaches to the profile needed for recreation and flood protection.
